I just want to give some props to Protonmail for their tenacity and for looking out for the client.
They have had "state" type attacks, hackers, been held ransom and had the UK go after them hard. They just keep improving. They have over 2 million clients now.
They are so encrypted they can't help you if lose your password or the like, your account can NOT be recovered. They don't have access to their own stuff. No back doors, nothing.
They recently added Tor to the site. They are located in Switzerland and are (mostly) immune to 3rd party subpoena. The last I was in contact with them they said it wouldn't matter anyway. If they sent the subpoenaed info it would be still encrypted and a frog's hair from impossible for even high level government forces to decrypt. Your local Sheriff's Department sure as hell ain't going to get to it. They know their own product and cannot decrypt it. I have to look into this farther but even your IP is now nearly impossible to trace to my understanding. Any CC info is encrypted if you purchase something.
I recommend that anyone that doesn't want your information accessible to Big Bother or a nosy ex girlfriend consider using Protonmail.
