Physical fitness linked to academic success

Fit students perform better on standardized tests, study shows

Physically fit students tend to score higher on standardized tests than their less fit peers, a new study suggests.

Test scores dropped more than one point for each extra minute it took middle and high school students to complete a 1-mile run/walk fitness test, Dr. William J. McCarthy and colleagues at the University of California in Los Angeles found.

Schools and parents seeking to optimize their students' academic performance should take heed, McCarthy noted in an e-mail to Reuters Health. For optimal brain function, "it's good to be both aerobically fit and to have a healthy body shape," he wrote.

McCarthy and colleagues compared physical fitness and body weight measures with scores on California's standardized math, reading, and language tests among 749 fifth-graders, 761 seventh-graders, and 479 ninth-graders who attended schools in Southern California between 2002 and 2003.

About half of the students were girls, 60 percent were white, 26 percent were of Hispanic ethnicity, and about 7 percent each were African American and Asian/Pacific Islander. Almost 32 percent of the students were overweight and about 28 percent were obese, the researchers report in The Journal of Pediatrics.

The investigators estimated students' aerobic fitness according to their 1-mile run/walk time on a flat track. With a 15-minute maximum allowed time to complete the test, the boys averaged slightly less than 10 minutes, while the girls averaged a little less than 11 minutes.

McCarthy's team found that nearly two thirds of the students (65 percent) fell below the state fitness standard for their age and gender. Compared with these students, those who met or exceeded fitness standards had higher average test scores. Allowing for age, social and economic status, gender, ethnicity, and body size did not significantly alter this association.

Compared with students of desirable weight, overweight and obese students also scored significantly lower on tests, the researchers report.

These findings, McCarthy's team notes, confirm and extend those of previous investigations. They say further studies are needed to figure out why aerobic fitness may play a role in academic performance.

If future studies confirm a cause-and-effect link between lower fitness and reduced academic performance, "schools will have to reverse their recent disinvestment in physical education ostensibly for the purposes of boosting student achievement," they conclude.

i think that 65% of the kids not completing a mile run in under 15 mins is absolutely atrocious!!!! and 60% of them are not even in shape for their age/size? wtf!? its bc the world today is so selfish--parents dont take the time to cook real food for their kids or pay attn to what the eat. they just take them to mcdonalds and feed them as much as they can eat. and on top of that most parents prolly dont even know why their child is overweight!
no wonder they make lower grades than the "fit" kids...they spend all their time thinkin about a damn happy meal!! i was a fat youngin when i was little too--i cut out McDonalds and candy and i be damned if i didnt become normal. i understand some kids have lower metabolisms than other kids and some are gonna be heavier but not 2/3rds or the United States should be overweight. And then we wonder why the hell Obama passes this "health care" bill...well aside from the fact that obama is the biggest fuckin moron on planet earth, he actually has some solid ground to back it up on....America is FAT! and now not only are we fat but according to Millenium Girl's article here, we are fat and stupid! I think i just wanna crawl in a hole and die! what is the world coming to?
we have a reject for president, fatties all over the place hoggin up all the air, and on top of that they are stupid?!?!?!

is life any better in Russia? France? Germany? what are the women like there?--do they like american guys? lol

MG - can you post up the link to where you found thisarticle, please?
I want to take it to work to show my bosses who thought I was talking shit when I pointed out the link with proper nutrition and workers being safer. To explain a bit, I work on a drilling rig as a medic and I'm also studying to be a personal trainer. The industry I work in is safety mad, we've got safety advisers on the rig who are earning 6 figures but their ways are all outdated and guys are still hurting themselves with stupid things. The food offshore is pretty shit nutritionally and a lot of the guys eat nothing but junk. I tried to point out that if they were fed better and we took shit off the menus then our safety record would improve. This didn't go down well, so I'm trying to find as many articles as possible to back up my theory, this would help.

          I can agree with this

If you the desire and discipline to be in shape and healthy that I dont doubt it would be too far off for some one to buckle down and study for something

I also have to think being healthier overall gives your body a better ability to function properly.
