    Confused...please help!

Ok so I have been around the boards for a while now ( a couple of Years or so)and I though I learned alot even though I don't always follow what I know is right. I'm in a depression have been for about 2 months. I finally decided to go and see a therapist while my kids are in their sibling therapy. The first thing she told me is to CUT Dairy, Flour, sugar and food coloring. She told me to eat Yogurt with A/B to clean out my stomach and soya for protein shakes. She told me up my protein( as I already knew) and get someting for the carb cravings and eat no carbs even if it sais whole wheat! I'm a little lost with the NO complex carbs cause to work out(which we will get too next time) I need energy right? So if she is right and I should follow her advice what should I use to help with the cravings. My body feels 90 emotionally and physically. I haven't stopped crying since I've seen her I am so lost and confused I feel like giving up! Can anyone with a PHD help me out??????

Hi Chrissy. Long time fan of yours here. I'm no PhD but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. The therapist may or may not be right. But you know what you have to do - reduce calories and cut out eating the junk especially at night. I know because I fight that demon too. I bet if you just ate quality foods and initially kept your total calories to no more than 2,500 you would lose weight and feel better emotionally and physically. And as you've written before, consistant excercise will make you feel better too.

Are you depressed because of your weight? Like you said you know what to you, but it is up to you to do it.

The most basic fact of our health is food, since every cell of our body comes from what we eat. Her telling you to cut out thos typs of foods kinda makes me think if she is woundering about food allergies. Many people have unsuspected food allergies, that can cause a wide rang of problems inclouding depression. My wife had on and off depression for years, and then we went to different Dr. and he tested her for allergies and she was alergic to just about every thing, and with food allergies its almost impossible to figure out what could cause any problems. For my wife it was broccli and chicked...lol. We had those about 3x a week. So she stoped eating those and after a few week she felt perfect. Now the Dr. gives her oral immunotherapy so she can eat them both with no prob. I dont know if your prob is with food allergies but it was for my wife, and food is very powerfull for us, so figure out what you can and cant have... wait a few weeks and see.

I think my Problem is that I give into that little voice inside my head that talks me into giving up. I've always been so negative with myself.

I'm going to do what I know works and what I have to do to lose weight. I'm going to use positive thinking everyday and I am going to take better care myself( Body , Mind and Spirit ). I loved my talk today with My therapist and told what I think of her eating suggestions. She told me thats my decision. But I think more than anything I need to deal with issues that date back to my childhood. I seem to be sheilding a small child with a layer of fat......something like that...lol Anyways I am stating to get the ball rolling in many areas of my life. I am now looking to change jobs, I am starting more holistic types of Therapies( Massages- craniosacral/ relaxation, Chiropractic, Yoga, Meditation) and continued Therapy. I am also working out again and eating healthier foods. I am confident that it will lead to a more balanced and fullfilling life.

Thank you to all who have taken the time to help me out. Thank you for all your wonderfull words of wisdome and commitment. For those who are interested I will keep popping in from time to time to update you on my progress. God Bless

Chrissy I am a believer in prayer and church(my opinion and religion) but also am a believer in setting long term goals like for 30 day intervals for one year. This kind of program will set u up for success and after a year the results that add up will be staggering if u really commit urself. Set up a food regimen and stick to it, set up a schedule for ur workouts and stick to it. If you set all this up and are consistent u will accomplish ur goals. Good luck

Soy will screw up your thyroid function and raise estrogen levels, the last thing needed when trying to lose weight. As soon as anyone suggests soy..that indicates to me the person has no business giving dietary advice. Flour, sugar and fruit juice is bad, fat free dairy is very good as the dairy calcium complex facilitates the burning of bodyfat. Depression is epidemic, exercise is helpful and often a discussion with a licensed clinical psych can do wonders.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I'm doing better. I still have those days when I feel depressed but they are getting to be fewer and fewer. On the days I'm not depressed I am feeling better and better. I am litteraly living my life one day at a time now and learning to enjoying every moment.

Chrissy, the fastest and most sensible way to lose weight is to stick to 40 grams of carbs each day. I read that this diet is used by USAF pilots when they go overweight and I tried it many years ago. It worked great. But you have to be strict. A huge salad mostly greens won't even have half that amount, and cruciferous vegetables like brocolli and cauliflower don't need to be factored in at all as the body burns more calories digesting them than they contain.

Still.....one banana or a medium slice of watermelon contain near 40 gms each, so get a carb counter.

Common sense rules of thumb, if it looks fattening, it probably is. Stay away from ALL dairy and remember that most of the calories are in the condiments like salad dressing. If you eat yogurt, get NON-fat, and forget bread....too high g.i. Eat plain OLD-FASHIONED long cooking oatmeal....with no butter and only zero cal sweetener, if anything...great slow g.i. complex carb for prolonged and sustained energy release. CUT OFF ALL carbs at about 6 p.m. and only eat proteins before bed. Get a carb chart and be strict. You will see progress in a matter of days.
