McGregor wins in first UFC match in 15 months

McGregor wins in first UFC match in 15 months

By Steve Almasy and Kevin Dotson, CNN

(CNN)Irish mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor was victorious in his first UFC match in over 15 months, with a technical knockout win over American opponent Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone in Las Vegas, Nevada. McGregor blitzed Cerrone from the opening bell and won the fight less than a minute into the first round
McGregor improves his career professional record to 22-4 with 19 knockouts. Cerrone, the UFC's all-time winningest fighter, drops to 36-14 in his professional career
This was McGregor's first time in the octagon since a loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov on October 6, 2018, and a night some thought might never happen. In March of 2019 McGregor tweeted that he planned to retire, then hinted at a future UFC fight the very next week.
There was a post-fight melee between McGregor and Nurmagomedov's camps, which resulted in a six-month suspension for the Irishman and a nine-month suspension for the Russian by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

McGregor's most recent victory in mixed martial arts came in November 2016 when he won by knockout over Eddie Alvarez.
Despite the long layoff, McGregor is the fourth ranked lightweight in UFC. He is 13th on the pound-for-pound ratings.

Cerrone is ranked fifth among lightweights.
The two fighters, however, competed in a heavier division, as welterweights.

I figured he would beat Cerronne. Cowboy hasn't been the same since the first time he hot knocked out. He is a legend of the sport. But not the fighter he used to be. Not taking anything away from McGregor. Cerronne in an interview said I got kicked on the head and I'm thinking Oh no. Not this soon. Then he went out. A great comeback for McGregor.

Those shoulder hits by McGregor were effin' brilliant and crafty, and it totally threw Cerrone off his game. Cerrone is still a legend no matter what. The guy is game to fight whoever and whenever, so that is why he is so loved in the sport. His problem has always been his slow starts in the first round, and also his hot and cold spells. He'll win a ton in a row, then lose out of nowhere from a guy he should beat.

I liked Conor's post-fight attitude and what he had to say....though it could have all been a fake set-up to regain fans after all the stupid shit he has done. He also posted a cool ass tweat out congratulating Trump....so that regained some brownie points for me, heh heh heh

Yeah. Lol. He's a staunch capitalist.

No way Cerrone would ever do the fall guy. Ever. Full stop.

Connor, to his credit, looks like he’s truly evolved quite a bit. I like both of these guys a lot, so no winner and loser for me; but Connor, whatever he’s gotten up to, it’s gonna work for him this year. You’ll see.

It didn't go as I had hoped. Cowboy got his nose broke right out of the box and never recovered. I have seen shoulders used before but never that effectively. I do have to credit Connor for that tactic. It definitely worked.
