    Squats again

The first week my 17 year old daughter and I were both sore but now we are getting our sets and numbers. Getting stronger. She finished her 10th year as as swimmer this summer and has also played many field sports over the years; soccer; field hockey and lacrosse. She insisted we do squats last night! I love that. She helps me out of my work, eat, sleep shell as well. On Tuesday we were super setting behind neck wide grip smith shoulder presses with wide grip behind neck lat pull-downs. Part of that super set is emphasizing full range of motion and as many know cheating on either causes bad form, lack of emphasis on small muscles and injury down the road because of reduced flexibility of the shoulder joint. Anyway I was doing the pull-downs and I guess this guy wanted on the machine and he was standing there then blurted out, "Man, that's graveyard shit!" At first I wasn't sure he actually said that figuring, "What kind of stupid-assed comment was that?" I didn't reply. My daughter finished her set and we went back to shoulders but it bothered me. I don't like to get red in the gym but what can I say, it's my nature. He went on to change the handle and do seated rope pull-downs. (I wondered, is that a thing? Never saw that before, seated rope pull-downs?) I told my daughter, "Maybe he's jealous you're training with me!" She laughed and said in her scolding voice, "Don't say anything!" Then I told her, "Well, if he wants to train you that's fine with me, but tell him I require his calves to be at least 11" beforehand!" We had a good laugh at that because his arms were bigger than his legs (more like twigs) and she wants to get bigger and especially stronger legs.
Yesterday we went back to the gym and I asked her what she wanted to do, she said, "Squats!" Inside I was like, "Yesss!" The rack was open so we set up the bar with her lighter weights on first so we could just take the bigger plates on and off between sets. We tried for 10x10 squats SS with straight leg dead-lifts but unfortunately we are both lousy at counting and I think we actually did 15 sets! We laughed about that too and generally have a good time. I've never really trained with a partner but this is definitely a win-win for both of us. As usual we finished our work out with a 20 minute ride on the exercise bikes. I was sweating before we hit the bikes and am a bit sore today, so even though our weight isn't really high, it's having the desired effect of getting DOMS but not keeping us away from the gym. As most of you know about starting new programs, most people don't make it to the fourth week. Good stuff!

Lots of guys don't bother doing legs .... Glad you and your daughter work out together. It's more fun.

Thanks for sharing. It's awesome when you can do something with your kids that you are both passionate about. Sounds like she is a tough cookie as well so I can see why you're so proud. Keep us updated of her progress!
