Have you ever considered switching to an operating system (e.g. Linux) that isn't susceptible to viruses?

you can, but hackers intentions are to get as many people as they can.. less users use linux, so they don't write as many viruses for that system

Im almost certain it'd be the same people that made your computer or fix your computer. They give you a virus, you pay them to fix it and eventually buy a new computer which then makes them all more money. A never ending cycle.

that actually makes sense.all those comp geeks that got picked on in high school are now top computer designers, can build them from scratch and write any program they want.writing a virus knowing that the average person like me who can't fix the problem of knows anything about operating systems will just bring it to them to have it looked at,fixed or but a new one.hmmmm...

For all practical purposes, there are no linux viruses. I have read that there are maybe a dozen or so, mostly developed as proofs of concept, but there are no llnux viruses in the wild.

What few anti-virus packages there are for Linux are mainly for people running mail servers and other systems that may provide services to Windows clients. The idea is that the antivirus will help prevent the Windows clients from getting infected -- the linux machines themselves are immune.

I've been running Linux for about a dozen years now, and I don't have an antivirus on this machine -- I don't need it.

One of the reasons LInux is less susceptible to viruses is the way that Linux/Unix permissions work. In order to make a file executable, I have to set the executable bit -- there is no such thing as just appending a .com, .exe, .bat, or other file extent to a file making the file executable.

As far as the argument about fewer users running Linux goes, you have to remember that the majority of servers on the Net run a Unix or Linux of some type. Google's search engine alone is powered by something on the order of 5,000-10,000 machines running RedHat Linux.
