    Fibre

    What is fibre?

Dietary fibre is considered to be very helpful in the prevention of many diseases. It used to be known as "roughage" and is the part of food that cannot be digested and absorbed to produce energy in the body.

There are two types of fibre; water-soluble and water-insoluble.

    Where is it found?

Foods containing whole grains such as oats, barley, beans, fruits and some vegetables. Flaxseed is also an excellent source of fibre (but NOT flaxseed oil).

    Why it is needed:

Soluble fibre can lower blood sugar levels as well as soften the stool, helping it to move through the body with greater ease. As a result, fibre is considered to help protect against gastrointestinal cancers such as colon cancer.

Fibre is also very filling, reducing the appetite.
