I like the approach you are taking - I'd do the same. No way in heck I would ever be the one to try to get him to try gear, being a parent. My son is about the same age and trains very seriously now. I would not put him on gear unless he was going to make it a career and I wouldn't recommend that. I would discourage it. Lots of down sides using early. I was in my thirties before I used gear.
