Creatine Monohydrate is the Only Legal Supplement That Actually Works and You Are Still Taking It Wrong

After 30 years of research, thousands of peer-reviewed studies, and billions of dollars spent on marketing, the supplement industry has produced exactly one compound that consistently and reliably enhances performance and muscle growth in every demographic tested: Creatine Monohydrate. Everything else in your cabinet is either a placebo, a stimulant disguised as a performance enhancer, or an overpriced version of something you already get from food.

The basic reality that beginners need to understand is this: you do not need a "loading phase." The loading protocol of 20g per day for 5 to 7 days was designed for clinical trial efficiency, not for practical supplementation. It saturates your intramuscular phosphocreatine stores faster, but it also causes significant gastrointestinal distress and water retention that scares beginners into thinking creatine "bloats" them. A steady dose of 5g per day will achieve full saturation in approximately 28 days with zero GI issues. The destination is the same; the loading phase is just a faster, more uncomfortable route.

Now here is the advanced biochemistry that separates the real practitioners from the label readers. The timing of your creatine dose matters far more than any supplement company will tell you, because it directly affects the Creatine Transporter (SLC6A8) activity. This sodium-dependent transporter is upregulated by insulin. Taking creatine with a meal that contains carbohydrates and protein (triggering an insulin response) increases intracellular creatine uptake by approximately 60% compared to taking it on an empty stomach with water. Every single person who dry-scoops creatine pre-workout on a fasted stomach is literally flushing 40% of it through their kidneys without it ever reaching the muscle cell.

The second critical error is the form of creatine. The industry has created an entire ecosystem of "advanced" creatine formulations: Creatine HCL, Creatine Ethyl Ester, Buffered Creatine (Kre-Alkalyn), Creatine Nitrate. Every single one of these has been tested head-to-head against plain Creatine Monohydrate in peer-reviewed trials, and not one has demonstrated superior intramuscular creatine accumulation. Creatine Ethyl Ester actually performed WORSE than Monohydrate because it degrades into Creatinine (a waste product) in the acidic environment of the stomach before it can even be absorbed. You are paying triple the price for a molecule that converts to biological garbage before it reaches your bloodstream.

The final point that every enhanced athlete should understand is the interaction between Creatine and Androgen Receptor (AR) Density. A 2009 study from the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition demonstrated that 3 weeks of creatine supplementation increased Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels by 56% in resistance-trained males. For an enhanced athlete, this has two critical implications. First, it means creatine may potentiate the androgenic effects of your cycle by increasing the conversion of Testosterone to DHT via 5-alpha reductase. Second, for athletes genetically predisposed to Androgenetic Alopecia (male pattern baldness), creatine supplementation during a DHT-heavy cycle (Masteron, Proviron, Winstrol) could significantly accelerate hair loss by compounding the follicular DHT load.

Know what you are taking. Know how it interacts with your stack. And for the love of gains, stop buying Creatine HCL.

So this means taken with your post workout meal (carb-filled of course) is best? Ive always scooped it prewo.. and i never bought into the loading phase stuff either. Always ran it 5g each time I would start it back up

Much of its based on individuality. An ideal post-workout shake optimizes muscle recovery, replenishes depleted glycogen stores, and creates a highly anabolic environment. Pairing fast-digesting proteins with fast-acting carbohydrates significantly enhances nutrient uptake and maximizes the absorption of performance supplements like creatine. Taking creatine(5Gms....or more) restores depleted phosphocreatine stores in the muscles, helping you recover faster for your next session. It also helps heal micro-tears in muscle fibers and reduces post-exercise inflammation. It also creates a higher post wo blood flow, making your muscles more receptive to absorbing nutrients, especially when paired with carbohydrates and protein and, as I'm sure you already know, it draws water into muscle cells, which indirectly promotes protein synthesis and gives muscles a fuller look.

I may try it it post workout meal then. I recently ordered me some from amazon called momentous, its heavy metal tested with barebone ingredients (no artificial colorings, flavors, sweeteners etc) for those who are more concerned about that / trying to avoid. It has lab results tests too I believe and is pretty highly rated. They have plain and a lemon option which is really good. Was using Jocko’s creatine before. Lot’s of good brands out there though.

Check back in and lets see how you respond.
