She wanted it, she got it and absolutely loves it.
I bought my 8-year old a left-hand Davidson electric guitar for Christmas. She is ecstatic. It's a Stratocaster style.
Also got her a small amp. It's got no case. Are they hard to get?

Any tips what do do now? I'd like her to learn some cords so she knows what to do in practice. Where do I go from here?

My only experience in music is throwing up a bone and humming the 2001 Space Odyssey.

get ear plugs.. learning is harder on the bystanders then the participants :)

Dude pm me i can help you, i just started playing over the past few months. I can play a whole list of songs and i know most of the theory to back it up i am not a guy just learning off tab.

chords and scales are good for a foundation but Ive been playing 6-7 years and only learned from tabs. They are alot easier to learn from imo. If she just wants to play for fun..plus in the process you learn the chords anyway and can start making your own stuff up

If you dont wanna fork out the money for private lessons. Go to your local music store and buy a DVD that shows the basics. Thats what i did and from that i was able to learn everything else on my own.

i've played bass since 2000...and music is awesome...haha...best of luck to her and her new found dream...here's a link i thought you might enjoy bro...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ix4TNJvVk8M

watch that whole video...it's no gimmick that 8 yr old is reallly playing with a legend and the legend is astounded

i would recommend watching all the videos of him on youtube, because there are plenty of him at an earlier age as well...possibly show your daughter the videos as inspiration...and teach her...that no matter what the style is today...Jazz and blues ARE the ROOTS for ALL music today....

must be a rock band fan

hahaha, negative...like i said...i've played bass for awhile and have taught myself guitar over the years...lol...i can't figure those games out...the crowd boos me everytime...

by the way bro...get her some piano lessons...if you can play piano, you can play every instrument..i love the piano...if only i was decent at it :goof:

dude get the actiuon set up on the guitar and put light string on it. Super slinky ernie ball. NOthing more discouraging than having trouble barring strings. Get a teacher and get her lessons, she is not old enough to put her own practice sessions. Good luck

Agreed...

at her age, the lighter the strings....the better....it'd help if you got a guitar and got involved too "dad"

I always wanted to play the bass,
and the three-year-old wants drums!
Mom will need some earphones, LOL!

it is not that loud what type of amp did u buy if u need an amp get a 5 watt crate tube amp i play with that amp in my room and it is just loud enough for me to hear but not loud enough to bother the people in my house.

Invest in lessons though definately

Dude ernie ball slinky is what most of the pros play with, they are the standard string in rock music

surely you're not lecturing me? I've been playing for 8 yrs man...i know what they pros use...and not most of the pros use are light string...clapton def. doesn't play with light string..nor do the maj. of metal players...but for an 8 yr old light strings would be the better to manipulate is what i'm sayin...

sorry if i misunderstood:afro:

check that clapton uses super slinkys

Ernie Ball is the pioneer of rock and roll guitar strings. Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Steve Vai, and Slash are among the long list of Slinky players.

more info.

Just because you have played for 8 years does not mean you know everything. There are dudes playing 30-40 years that do not know everything

shit, i meant to say the gauges of the strings he uses...it's been awhile since i've done much research on it, but last i read he was using a "thicker" "heavier" string .i don't care about the brand...ernie makes some good strings but i was talking about the gauge...my bad bro...and def. don't know everything...haha absolutely not...

My father plays bass for 40+ years he was a proffessional musician in the 70's i just picked it up guitar like 4-5 months ago. IT is going really well i practice 3 hours a day and take lessons 2 times a week. It is going really good i can play about 30 songs and impriove in the solo area.

I think you are thinking of SRV who uses super heavy strings. He uses 12's to play

drums would be a killer......your gonna go crazy

You were right. The eight year old started drumming while I was watching tv and I had to bite my lip. I was fuming...I just kept thinking about what you wrote.
