A week or so ago, three students were picked up for starting two fires in our high school. One fire was started in the room across the hall from my classroom.
Orphaned at age six because my mother and brother were killed in a fire, I was not particularly happy about this (although I was very happy they caught the guys).
Here's the thing, yesterday a teacher called me asking me to write a letter on behalf of one of the guys because things weren't looking good for him in court and of course, he is innocent.
This particular guy, last year, was added to my science class midyear. On his first day, he started spouting off about he was "runnin' this jawn..." blah blah blah. I told him in no uncertain terms that I was the boss and my way rules end-of-story.
Then he said, "I'm gonna wait for you after school and put a bullet in your ass," then added, "I'm gonna bring my boys up here after school and beat you the fuck up," and also said, "You come down my way and we gonna kill your ass!"
I wrote him up but they never did anything.
Since then, once he got talking to the other students, he realized he was talking to the wrong dude. I treated him cordially after that and he rescinded the attitude, at least as far as I could see him.
Now the Administration is using the incident against him in court. He's in special ed and has a case manager. She doesn't want to write a behavior plan for him because she's lazy and is behind in her work, so she called me to write a letter that he and I are "Friends" now and get along.
I have some issues with this.
1) to this day I still look around for where the bullets will fly from when I leave the building
2) I place value on first impressions and his was as a "racist white people hatin' gang bangin' pretending-assed m*ther f*cker." None of which impresses or scares me.
3) The teacher for the past two years, used her friends in scheduling to change all her trouble students to my classes which has made me furious and miserable.
4) I cannot fathom defending anyone from arson unless I know for a fact the person is innocent.
5) The teacher is going to med school next year, but I will be left here and remembered as the one who went against the current administration.
Have I thought this through?
YES
and my decision is, "Fuck him, fuck her, they can all kiss my ass!"
