Notice this comment: "The companies own or guarantee about $5 trillion in home loans, about half the nation's total." We are far from the end of the real estate crash.
Once again the Fed bails out something that is none of their business. No different than when they bailed out Morgan Stanley earlier this year, forgave the airlines their "loans" or when the FDIC took over the list of failed banks this year:

We are slowly becoming a socialist nation and everyone seems quite ok with it.............as long as the government bails them out all is well. We need to take some of the responsibility for the financial mess this country is in and suck up the losses not have them bail us out and then tax us for it with interest.
Remember one little fact, the government MAKES NO MONEY ......... they merely take ours and redistribute it.
