George Orwell's 1984 and Animal Farm.
Ironically Orwell was a socialist, but was adamantly against any form of totalitarianism in government. 1984 shows what will happen when we put "big brother" in charge of everything and constant video surveillance of everyone and everything. Hmm, a huge government that constantly watches everyone and everything, sound familiar?
Animal farm shows the failure of communism and how Stalin (who is a pig named Napoleon in the book) takes over and makes life even worse than it was under the former Czars, and ends up making "everyone equal, but some are more equal than others."
They are both really damn good books. I bought 1984 on Wednesday and finished it on Thursday, and Animal Farm I bought on Friday and finished it by that afternoon. Both are really entertaining and I couldn't put them down. I highly recommend them, not only are they fun to read but warn us of what can come in the future if we allow too much government to impose on our lives.
