Going to have my left shoulder done in July. I had it scoped about 12yrs ago and he cleaned up a bunch of scar tissue etc. This time I have a torn labrum and my clavicle needs to be shaved because the tendon is rubbing on it. I'm sure there is plenty of scar tissue also.

Last time I turned down the shoulder block. Pain was pretty bad for 3 or so days then continued to get better. Since the damage is worse this time should I get the block and if anyone here has had a similar surgery with similar injuries what was your recovery time and how long until you were back in the gym?

Recently has acl reconstruction and miniscus repair. I had the nerve block, why would you turn that down bro? It only lasted for about 24 hours, but it helped quite a bit.

Did you also turn down sedation/local?

I just had this done last july, I did not have any previous injuries like you but I had a partially torn labrum (normal wear for pitchers) and a bone spur that had to be cleaned up. I was unable to really work out anything upper body for 6 months ( it was severly limited and any upper body training I did was purely theraputic only). After that I took about 2 months off of all types of lifting and since about 3 months ago have been lifting pretty hard again. Everything is almost back to normal but decline presses are still a bitch. I get post surgery pain sometimes especially with that movement. I did this surgery to keep my career going with baseball so it was worth it, from a bodybuilding aspect it has sucked because I don't feel as strong upper body wise anymore. I am hoping it will work itself back, they said I would be fully recovered in about a little over a years time. Im getting close but still have a few more months. I will keep you updated on it if you want, feel free to ask me anything your unsure about and maybe I can help you clear it up.

I turned down the block because the doc didnt warn me about it before hand. I was already on the gurney getting prepped and he walked over to tell me what he wanted to do and I said fuck that, i'll deal with the pain after. That was back in 96, recently a friend of mine had his shoulder done and said getting the block was painful it self so that's why I'm still debating it.

Fuck, I hope to god it doesn't take me that long till I can get back in again. I was hoping 2-3 months at most until I could start training. Shit, now I'm really worried...lol

they should sedate you first, fentanyl + versed, before they give you the block. It feels like some electric current is flowing down your nerves for a few seconds but it isn't that bad at all.

I had almost the exact same surgery a few years ago, except mine was not arthroscopic, the doc went in through a 2" incision over the AC joint. I had the clavicle resection, and my labrum was just frayed, not torn, so they also cleaned that up. Get the nerve block. It spooked me when they described how they would do it (a shot in the neck, and you have to be awake when they give it to you b/c you flinching lets them know they hit the correct nerve). Like Thate said, they should give you something to relax you prior to the nerve block, so it's not really as bad as it sounds.

I was back in the gym the next week while I still had the sling on trying to do leg extensions and one arm curls, but looking back that probably wasn't the smartest thing for me to do. Your Doc may say you don't need rehab, but after a couple of months, the pain was still more than the doc thought it should be so he recommended rehab and that made all the difference in the world. I was lifting again pretty intensly in as little as a month, but it took a good 5 or 6 months before I felt like I was at 100%.

Fentanyl = good shit!! And the versed will keep you from remembering the rest.

Drugs good - Pain bad!!!
