How much would utilities cost ?

I am looking at a apartment small one bed room. It has a PTAC unit. you know the ones that hotels have. kinda like a window ac but u control heaet and cold from there.
How much would it cost to warm up in a chicago winter.

The apartment is really small. i would say a living room the size of 12 by 18
and a bedroom that is 12 x 12.. i think going by memore
 
I dont know...lots of variables to consider there....

anyone form up north know? I live in deep south...
 
yeh. i m just afraid that i dont get stuck witha 400 dollar utility bill in winter. i ask the apartment lady and she gave me a number but i m sure once i am locked into a lease its not like i can go and bitch at her lol.
 
Those are 20 amp 220 units. Pretty efficient and using fluorescent or led light bulbs throughout your house will save alot too. If the insulation in the place is good. 100dollars or less per month for electric.
 
PTAC's are not very energy effecient, even the new 410a units.
You probably have a 10k heat strip in it, unless it is reverse cycle which is pretty uncommon for PTAC's. It could run you 180-200 a month depending on what they charge for power.
Also a consideration, what if your power goes out? Then what? If the wall unit is all you've got you could be in trouble.
And Shovel, they are usually 30 amps from my experience here in FL.
 
It is not gonna cost you a fortune, but the electric resistance heat is not the best option. I do not remember the utility rates in IL (I am an energy engineer by trade), but they are kinda high if I recall. You can save some money while compromising indoor air quality by adjusting and or blocking the outdoor air intake on it so hot air in the summer and cold air in the winter does not need re-cooled/heated. The ventilation load created by those little boogers is more than you think. Of course, IAQ is reduced.
