Wow, that brings back some memories. Back to the basics. I remember having to do foot sweeps (without a partner!) for 30 minutes sometimes. Old school judo.

God I thought I was a badass back then. Wrestling, Judo and Golden Gloves. I was MMA before there was MMA.
 
Nothing works like the basics.
I see it on the mats many times a week. We get these kids that get on YouTube and see all this wildly complex stuff that only works rarely.

Here's a concept for you: Advanced Basics. The best guys are the best because they're the best at the basics. That's what I've experienced and observed and there's just not much getting around it.

I think it is cyclic, as you advance you continual return to improved basics. I think you see it most in wrestling and grappling.

Very true. I'm 36 years into training, and it is always a nuances use of something basic that works when all of the other fun stuff has failed.
